Umrah Without Mahram, Is It Allowed?

Muslim scholars differed about whether or not it is permissible for a woman to go to Umrah and Hajj without a Mahram, as follows:

Firstly, It Is Allowed

According to the Maliki and Shafi’i schools, it is permissible to perform Umrah without a Mahram for a woman,

provided that the woman is accompanied by a group of trustworthy women and that she does not fear for herself.

And that is for Allah saying:

“And [due] to Allāh from the people is a pilgrimage to the House – for whoever is able to find thereto a way” [Al – Imran: 97]

The Prophet (pbuh) explained the ability to mean the provision and the ride, and he did not mention the Maharam with them.

Secondly, It Is Not Allowed

The Hanafis and the Malikis agreed that it is not permissible for women to perform Umrah without a Mahram,

according to the Hadith of The Prophet (pbuh):

On the authority of Ibn Omar, The Prophet (pbuh) said:

“It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Alla and the Last Day to travel a day and night’s journey, except with her Mahram”

[narrated by Muslim]
