The Three Types of Ihram Got Explained

Main three types of Ihram are Ihram Al Ifrad, Ihram Al Qiran, and Ihram Al Tamattu, so we will explain them all to you:

The Three Types of Ihram | Al Ifrad

It is for the pilgrim to enter the Ihram state for Hajj only, and when he reaches Mecca, he performs the circumambulation of arrival (Tawaf Al Qudum).

Then, if he wants, he may perform Hajj or delay it until after Tawaf al-Ifadah.

During Al Ifrad Ihram, the pilgrim should not cut his hair or nails, or break out of his Ihram in any way, except after stoning Jamrat Al-Aqaba.

On the day of Eid, he breaks the Ihram state by shaving his hair, and he is not obligated to offer a sacrifice.

Al Ifrad Ihram steps:

  • First of all, I intend to enter the state of Ihram for Hajj only before reaching Miqat.
  • When you arrive in Mecca, perform the Tawaf al-Qudum, and do sa’y between Safa and Marwa if you wish( It is Sunnah).
  • Remain committed to Ihram until standing in Arafat, and then complete all the Hajj.
  • After completing the Hajj, you can enter the state of Ihram for Umrah from the Aisha Mosque in Al-Naim, and you do not have to sacrifice.

The Three Types of Ihram | Al Qiran

In Al Qiran Ihram, the pilgrim enters the state of Ihram to perform Hajj and Umrah together.

Then, if he wishes, he performs Hajj or delays it until after Tawaf al-Ifadah, and he does not shave his head or cut his hair, nor does he leave his ihram except after stoning Jamrat al-Aqaba.

And he can break the Ihram state on the day of Eid, so he shaves, and he must sacrifice.

Al Qiran Ihram steps:

  • You have to intend to perform Hajj and Umrah together in one Ihram before reaching Miqat.
  • When you reach Mecca, perform Tawaf al-Qudoum and sa’y, and stop at Arafat.
  • Spend the night in Muzdalifah and throw Jamrat al-Aqaba on the morning of Eid.
  • Then shave and perform Al – Ifaadah circumambulation and the sa’y (if you did not perform the sa’y after the tawaf Al-Qudum).
  • Complete the Hajj by stoning the Jamarat and overnight in Mina, and performing the sacrifice.

The Three Types of Ihram | Al Tamattu

Tamattu’ Ihram is when the pilgrim enters a state of Ihram for Umrah first during the months of Hajj.

When he reaches Mecca, he circumambulates and for Umrah, after that shaves his head or shortens his hair, and exits his state of Ihram.

If it is the day of al-Tarwiyah – the eighth of Dhu al-Hijjah – he enters the ihram state for the Hajj only.

Then he performs all the actions of the Hajj, and it is obligatory for him to offer a sacrifice.

Al Tamattu Ihram steps:

  • Wear the Ihram and intend to perform Umrah before reaching the Miqat.
  • When you reach Mecca, you must circumambulate the Kaaba 7 times.
  • Then go for sa’y between Safa and Marwah, and after you have finished, cut or shave your hair.
  • Take off the Ihram clothes and put on your normal clothes, break the state of Ihram, and sacrifice.
  • When it is time to go out to Arafat, you must enter the Ihram state from where you are, and stand in Arafat.
  • From Arafat, go to Muzdalifah after Maghrib and stay there until after midnight.
  • On the day of Eid, go to Mina, and stone Jamrat Al-Aqaba then cut some of your hair, and break the Ihram.
  • Stay in Mina for days to throw the stones, or go to Mecca for Tawaf al-Ifadha and Sa’i between Safa and Marwah on the day of Eid, then you can return to Mina and spend the night there and throw the stones.

Which Type Of Umrah Is Preferable?

The Islamic scholars unanimously agreed that each of these three types is permissible:

On the authority of Aisha, she said:

” We went out with the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh), during the Farewell Pilgrimage (Hujjat Al-Wada), some of us enter the state of Ihram for Umrah, and some of us enter the state of Ihram for Hajj, when we reached Mecca, Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) said:

“Whoever enters the state of Ihram for the Umrah and does not sacrifice, let him break his Ihram.

And whoever enters the state of Ihram for Umrah and sacrifices, must sacrifices first then break his Ihram state, and whoever performs Hajj must complete the Hajj [Bukhari]
