How to Perform Umrah: A Step-By-Step Guide
There are 4 pillars of Umrah you should do, or your Umeah is not valid:
1- Ihram
Firstly, The first and most important stage of performing Umrah in Ihram, through the following:
- Arrive at your Miqat, Learn about the Miqats of Ihram here.
- Once you reach Miqat, you have to wash and clean yourself.
- Put on your Ihram clothing.
- Pray two rak’ahs, and intend to enter the state of Ihram for Umrah.
- During Ihram, you must say the Talbiyah, which is:
“ I am at your service, O Allah, I am at your service, You have no partner, I am at your service. Praise and blessing belong to you, and the kingdom. You have no partner”
“لبيك عمرة، لبيك اللهم لبيك، لبيك لا شريك لك لبيك، إن الحمد والنعمة لك والملك، لا شريك لك”
Note that the man has to raise his voice when saying the Talbiyah, while the woman has to lower her voice.
2- Al Tawaf
Secondly, The second thing that you must do to perform Umrah is circumambulation around the Kaaba, which is done in the following steps:
- When you reach Mecca, enter the Hara with the right foot.
- Start Tawaf 7 times around Kaaba starting from Al Hajar Al Aswad (Black Stone).
- Keep the Kaaba on your left and begin the circumambulation.
- At the beginning of each run you have to say:
“In the name of Alla, Allah is great” (Bismillah, Allahu Akbar ).
” بسم الله والله أكبر”
- If you can touch or kiss the Black Stone that’s fine but doesn’t crowd on it.
- If you reach Al Rukan Al Yamani touch it without kissing, and if it is not possible for him, you should not crowd over it.
- When you hold Al Hajar Al Aswad or approach it say:
“Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire!”
[Al Baqarah: 201]
- A man can walk faster in the first three rounds of Tawaf, which is called Ramal.
- It is also possible for a man to show his right shoulder during Tawaf..
- After completing the circumambulation, do not forget or pray two rak’ahs at the shrine of Ibrahim.
3- Al Saa’i
After you finish the circumambulation, you have to go out for saa’i between Safa and Marwah, as a result of Allah words:
“Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of God, so whoever performs Hajj to the House or performs Umrah, there is no blame on him for circumambulating them both, and whoever volunteers good, Allah is Thankful, Knowing.”
[Al Baqarah: 185]
Saa’i between Safa and Marwa is performed in the following way:
- You go out from the Haram to Safa, stand on it, and recite the verse that we mentioned earlier.
- Moreover, Pray (Dua’a) whatever you want.
- Then you walk down from Al-Safa to Al-Marwah, and when you reach the two green flags, hurry to walk “jogging”, and this is for men only.
- When you reach the second flag, go back to walking normally until you reach Al Marwah.
- Climb Al-Marwah and repeat the verse and the prayer you said on Al-Safa, and with this, you will have finished the first half of Al Saa’i..
- Now you have to return from Marwah to Safa and repeat the verses and prayers you said to finish the second half of the pursuit.
- Repeat the saa’i between Safa and Al-Murra until you complete 7 circuits, ending with Al-Marwah.
4- Exit the State of Ihram
After that, you finished your Umrah, there is one small thing left to do;
Which is to exit the state of Ihram by shaving or shortening the hair:
- Firstly, it is better for a man to shave his hair completely, or to cut it short.
- Secondly, women do not have to shave their hair, and it is sufficient to shorten it a little.
