How to Protect Yourself During Umrah

Here are the most important things you should do in order to protect yourself during Umrah:

  • Stay in touch with family and friends at home, and let them know where you are at all times.
  • You can carry a basic unlocked cell phone with you for emergencies, and it’s handy to buy a Mecca or Medinah SIM.
  • Avoid carrying a lot of cash with you in crowded places or in markets.
  • Get the necessary vaccinations such as meningitis, yellow fever, and polio (depending on the country you come from); because people come to Umrah and Hajj from all over the world, you have to protect yourself well.
  • When you exit the hotel watch out for pickpockets.
  • In hotels keep your valuables in a safe place so you don’t lose them.

  • Read the fire safety instructions for the hotel or place of residence, or any places you visit, especially how to escape from these places in an emergency.
  • Make an identity card for yourself containing your name, passport number, contact information in your country of origin, or Saudi Arabia, contact information for your group leader or someone accompanying you, and notes on illnesses or allergies if any.
